The European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 also marks the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Keban Salvage Project, signifying both a first step towards the foundation of METU-TAÇDAM (Centre of Research and Assessment of Historical Environment, Middle East Technical University) and a turning point for Turkish archaeology and cultural heritage management.

Assembling under the leadership of METU President Kemal Kurdaş in the 1960s, numerous national and international teams made their first attempts in 1966 at documenting the cultural heritage that was soon to be flooded by the waters of the Keban Dam. Integrated field work began in 1968, and after incorporating a number of further dam projects on the Euphrates in the following years, the project became one of the leading examples of its kind among the world’s cultural heritage research.

In this context, together with the contributions of METU-TAÇDAM, Hacettepe University-HÜTKAM, Chicago University-Oriental Institute, British Institute at Ankara (BIAA) and American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT), a memorial event is being organized to take place in METU TAÇDAM -  Museum of Archaeology and Architecture Auditorium on November 9, 2018.
